Recommended 4x4 routes in Iceland

Best 4x4 routes in Iceland

Here are some of the routes that we recommend, and which amazing sights to see on each of them.

Make sure you're driving a 4x4 SUV and have a full tank before heading into the highland. Also keep up to date on road conditions and the weather forecast - both of which can change quickly in Iceland.

Read our guide to driving in Iceland, where you'll find plenty of tips that are designed to keep you comfortable and safe on the road in Iceland.

Kjalvegur F35

Road F35 (Kjölur - see road conditions map) leads through the middle of Iceland is a very unique trip to take as it connects from the Golden Circle in the south up to the north of Iceland close to Varmahlíð. The road is around 170 km's long and is a shorter trip than going Sprengisandur. Like most F roads this one is only passable during summer. During this drive you will pass Langajökull Glacier, make a stop at Kerlingarfjöll for a rest and then continue to Hveravellir geothermal location where you can take a soothing bath in the hot spring, In Hverafjöll you can find accommodation.

Sprengisandur F26

Sprengisandur route

This 200 km highland pass on road F26 is mostly barren and only passable during summer (see official road conditions map). The road is gravel and a 4x4 car is highly recommended. On this route you'll have fantastic views to Hofsjökull to the west, Tungnafellsjökull and Europe's biggest clacier, Vatnajökull, to the east. Waterfalls on the Sprengisandur route include Aldeyjarfoss and its neighbour, Hrafnabjargafoss (see map).

Fjallabak - Landmannalaugar

This would be one of our favorite destinations in Iceland to recommend. Stunning scenery and hiking opportunities in the color mountains. We only allow one route to Landmannalaugar which is taking the F208's northern route. Be careful here as there is a river to cross in the final bit and every year there are cars lost in this location. Safest option is to park the car and take the walking bridge to the campsite which is around 500 meters further.
